Why Do Businesses Actually Look For Marketing Help?

Most businesses do not wake up one morning and suddenly decide, “I think I need a marketing consultant.”

Usually, it happens more gradually. The business gets busier, social media becomes inconsistent, the website has not been updated in ages, there are promotions that need artwork, somebody wants to start doing videos, an event is coming up, and suddenly marketing has become this very long list of things that everyone knows needs to be done but nobody really has the time to manage properly.

And that is often when people start looking for marketing support.

The funny thing is, it is not always because their marketing is bad. Sometimes the business has simply grown beyond the way they used to manage it. What worked when there were only a few things to handle may not work anymore when there are more customers, products, platforms and campaigns involved.

I see this quite often, especially with smaller businesses. Social media might be handled by one person, the website by someone else, designs are outsourced when needed, and the business owner is somewhere in the middle trying to make sure everything looks vaguely like it belongs to the same company.

Individually, nothing may be terribly wrong. The problem is that nobody is looking at everything together.

Marketing Is More Than Keeping Your Social Media Alive

One of the biggest misconceptions about marketing is that if the social media pages are active, the marketing is being taken care of.

Not quite.

Your social media can look fantastic, but what happens when somebody clicks through to your website? Does it tell the same story? Can they easily find what they saw on Instagram? Is the information current? More importantly, is there a clear way for them to enquire, buy or do whatever you actually want them to do?

The same applies to branding, content, advertising and even events. They are different parts of marketing, but customers do not experience them separately. To them, it is simply your business. That is why I prefer looking at marketing as a whole rather than treating every platform as another item that needs content.

Sometimes the problem is not that a business needs more marketing. It needs the marketing it is already doing to work better together.

You Probably Have More Ideas Than You Think

I have also realised that most business owners are not short of ideas.

They usually have too many.

“I want to do TikTok.”

“We should redo the website.”

“Can we run ads?”

“I think we need more videos.”

“Maybe we should start a blog.”

All perfectly valid ideas. But doing everything at once does not necessarily mean better marketing.

Before deciding what to create, I would rather understand what the business is trying to achieve, what is already working, where the gaps are and what can realistically be managed.

There is no point building an elaborate marketing strategy that looks impressive in a presentation but becomes impossible to execute after the first month.

Good marketing has to work in the real world too.

Sometimes What You Need Is Someone To Connect The Dots

This is probably the biggest reason clients come to me.

I work across marketing strategy, content creation, social media, branding, websites and event support, but very often a client does not come looking for one specific service.

They come with a problem.

Maybe enquiries have slowed down. Maybe their online presence has become messy. Maybe they have plenty happening within the business but are not communicating any of it properly. Or maybe they simply know their marketing needs attention but do not know where to begin.

That is where I prefer to start.

Tell me what is happening in the business first. Then we can work out what marketing actually needs to do about it.

It is also why I tend to get quite involved with the businesses I work with. I want to understand what customers are asking, what the business wants to sell, what is happening operationally and what limitations we are working with.

Sometimes I am behind the desk planning, designing, writing or working on a website. Sometimes I am at a filming session or an event because something needs to be captured for the content afterwards.

Marketing makes much more sense when you understand the business behind it.

Do You Need An In House Marketing Team?

Not necessarily.

For larger companies, having specialists for every area can make perfect sense. But for a smaller business in Singapore, hiring separate people for strategy, social media, content, design, websites and events may simply not be practical.

This is where outsourced marketing support can fill the gap.

It gives a business access to broader marketing experience without immediately having to build an entire internal marketing team. It can also work alongside whoever is already handling parts of the marketing internally.

The important thing is not whether your marketing person sits in your office five days a week.

It is whether somebody understands where the business is trying to go and can make the different pieces work towards it.

So Why Do People Look For Me?

Usually, it is not because they woke up wanting to buy “marketing services”.

They have something they need to solve. That is also why I do not think every conversation needs to begin with a perfectly written brief. Tell me what is happening, what you have been doing and what is bothering you about it.

Sometimes the answer may be content. Sometimes it may be the website. Sometimes it may require a bigger marketing plan, and sometimes you may discover that the thing you were preparing to spend money on is not actually the thing that needs fixing first.

That is the role I want Trixy.& to play.

Not simply another person producing things because they were requested, but someone who can understand the business, connect the different parts of its marketing and help work out what actually needs to happen next.

Perhaps that is the simplest answer to why businesses come looking for me.

They do not necessarily need more marketing. They need their marketing to make more sense.
